Headline

A constraint on the data model of a software system or a component

Description

Requirements analysis is typically focused on functional and non-functional requirements with data modeling typically seen as a separate activity, possibly initiated only in the design phase. In the context of this wiki, contraints on the data model, e.g., in terms of its expressiveness or shape, are considered requirements, too, and they are subject to a designated classifier for requirements.

Arguably, some data requirements could be (partially) turned into functional requirements. For example, rather than saying "the data model of the @system must support an association for employee mentorship" (see Feature:Mentoring), one could be saying "the @system must support data input, storage, and retrieval of mentors and mentees associated with employees". Possibly, some data requirements could be (partially) turned into non-functional requirements. In the context of this wiki, data requirements are deliberately separated, as it is hoped to lead to good separation of concerns and instructive requirements that are modeled or implemented more easily.
